After surviving a few battles, Howell eventually found himself in a Union prison camp at Point Lookout, Maryland. In 1947, at the age of 101, Howell made a rare recording at the Library of Congress, in which he described his enlistment, sudden capture, and his experience in the Union prison camp on the morning of April 15th, 1865, the morning Abraham Lincoln died. Julius Franklin Howell (17 January 1846-19 June 1948) was a Confederate veteran and commander-in-chief of the United Confederate Veterans after the American Civil War. Biography Julius Franklin Howell was born in Virginia in 1846, and he enlisted in the Confederate States Army in 1862 after many of his classmates were killed at Williamsburg during the Peninsula Campaign of the American Civil War . This is a fascinating and rare interview of an actual Confederate veteran, Julius Franklin Howell (1846-1948), who was born in Virginia in 1846, at the age of 16, in 1862, he enlisted in the Confederate Army to fight because the Federals were invading his home, as he himself stated quite clearly. He was a firm believer that the Confederacy did not fight for slavery, that he and his men were fighting to preserve State’s Rights. HOWELL, Julius Franklin, educator, was born in Nansemond county, Virginia on January 17, 1846; son of Edward and Sarah (Barnes) Howell, and grandson of Edward Howell.
